Macao Centre for Testing of Chinese Medicine, University of Macau
The Macao Centre for Testing of Chinese Medicine, University of Macau (MCTCM), endorsed by the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, is a technical support institution for Pharmaceutical Administration Bureau of the Macao SAR. The construction of the Centre began in July 2021 and was officially established on 12 January 2022. The construction of the Centre has been highly valued by the Macao government. Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng proposed in the Policy Address for the Fiscal Year 2022 and 2023: “To actively promote the construction of the Chinese medicines testing centre”. As of October 2024, nearly 120 test parameters of the Centre have been accredited by the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS), and the scope of accreditation covers the essential physical, chemical and microbiological test methods in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia.
The Centre aims to serve the Pharmaceutical Administration Bureau and “to develop Macao testing, realize Macao certification, and support the industrialization and internationalization of Chinese medicine in Macao”. Since the establishment, it has actively engaged in building quality management system, strengthening personnel development, enhancing testing capabilities, expanding testing services, strengthening exchange and communication, developing standards for traditional Chinese medicine, and developing leadership in standards. The Centre emphasizes in enhancing its professional influence and has actively led and participated in the proposal of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (ChP), US Pharmacopeia(USP), and China national standards. The Centre has World Health Organization (WHO) International Herbal Pharmacopoeia (IHP) expert, ISO standard expert, secretary of the Permanent Secretariat of Western Pacific Regional Forum for the Harmonization of Herbal Medicines (FHH), ChP committee member, USP Herbal Medicines Expert Committee member, American Herbal Pharmacopoeia consultant, Chinese medicine standard expert of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of China, etc.
The Centre hopes to fully utilize the advantages of mainland resources and branding in Macao to establish a Macao-style Chinese medicine testing industry with quality by standards and certification as the goal. And to provide quality assurance for the development of “Made in Macao”, “Products inspected by Macao” and “Products supervised by Macao”.
